What am I up to this summer?
This summer I am doing clinical research at the Berkeley Optometry center here in UC Berkeley. So far I have just survived my third day at work. I started training on Monday and there are lots of office tasks and different experiment procedures to learn. You know those flyers on the bulletin boards in different buildings that say "Do you wear glasses?", "Soft contact lens studies" or "Toric Lens studies"? I realized that I will be one of those people assisting the experiments.
I will be assisting the project coordinators experiments such as the extended contact lens wear and measure their corneal permeability, orthokeratology (rigid lenses that you wear at night and it corrects your vision so you will not need to wear glasses during the day), and other experiments sponsored by different companies.
So far I have done flyering, and who knew that there are so many different buildings on campus that I have never been too. Also I am adapting to the environment of all the different types of machine and programs that they use to keep data. Answering the phone is quite exciting, such as filling out questionnaires and interviewing patients over the phone, I cannot wait to finally start more patient interaction in person. For one study I will need to act as a translator because many of the participants will be middle aged Chinese women/men. I am very glad for the opportunity to learn more about the optometry field.
During other times of the day, I like to be in the library reading and studying for my upcoming exams. On the weekends, that's when I finally have my summer...a couple days of relaxation by going to SF, shopping, eating out and hanging out with friends at the movies.
