Why I love CNR!
As I went into my last telebears appointment with my advisor, Susan, I couldn't believe how fast the four years on college has gone by. It seems like just yesterday when I didn't even know how to use telebears. I started thinking about the things that have really shaped my college career, and being in CNR was definitely one of the things that defined my life at Berkeley. The free printing and the very comfortable couches are not the only great things about CNR.

Why I Decided to Become a PAL
Berkeley can seem like a big place when you first come here. Coming from a small high school from New Jersey, Berkeley was not only huge but had a completely different culture than what I was used to. Being in CNR was one of the things that made the transition a lot easier for me. CNR provided a small college environment within the huge campus of Berkeley. The staff and advisors were all very friendly, as well as the professors and other CNR students. I wanted to become a PAL to be there to provide advice for other students like me, who might need a little help transitioning to college, or need help choosing a major.

My Summer Plans
In two weeks I will be leaving for Uganda, and I'm really excited! I am going to be working with the Uganda Village Project, a non-profit providing sustainable public health projects in the Iganga District of Uganda. I have never been to Africa before, so I'm excited, but at the same time I don't really know what to expect. I'm pretty much ready to go; I got my malaria pills, my passport, my plane ticket. I will be there for two and a half months, with no electricity, flushing toilets, or running water.

Midterm Season
Midterm season has finally come! I hear the word "stressed" at least ten times walking around campus. The constant rain is not helping either. Rainy days can be good for studying, but it can also be depressing. In order to keep myself motivated and relatviely happy, I have a few rituals that I like to follow during midterm season. The first one, running. Some of you might wonder, who as time to exercise when you could be studying?, but a quick running break in between your studying can really help.

Study Breaks
As the second round of midterms comes around in the next few weeks, I have found ways to entertain myself with study breaks that really help me focus afterward. One good break over the weekend was going to the UCLA vs. CAL game. It was really awesome watching us beat them this year, especially after I drove down to LA last year to watch us lose:( I love going to the football games because it is such a great display of school spirit, and I feel like football really brings people together. I encourage everyone to go to at least one football game, because it's an important part of being a Cal student.

Making New Friends
Making new friends can be hard. Making new friends on a campus as big as Berkeley can be even harder. Coming in as a freshman from a small school in New Jersey, one of my biggest fears was not being able to make friends. It seemed like eveyrone knew at least a couple of people from their high schools, and it seemed like people already had their little groups that they hung out with. Since I didn't hit it off with my floormates, and I didn't know any other people in my building, I was desperate for other ways to find new friends, but I didn't know where to start.
