Section Assignments/Handouts

Section Assignments and Schedule (subject to change)

Always keep up to date with readings and assignments as indicated in the syllabus in your reader and by your GSI.

Here is a rough outline:

WEEK 1-- No section meeting.

WEEK 2-- Begin reading Ceremony. Eat at an "ethnic" restaurant of your choice with one or more classmates. Suggestions will be given in section week 2.

WEEK 3-- Bring abstract of Huntsinger, McCaffrey article (first 6 pgs) as disscussed week 2. For a brief explanation of abstracts, see here.

WEEK 4-- Bring abstract of Turner article.

WEEK 5-- Bring 3 sample test questions.

MIDTERM 1-- Feb 23. See sample questions below under Handouts.

WEEK 6-- Attend section as usual. Common property introduction. Paper assignment explained.

WEEK 7-- Meet your section where your GSI indicates, and bring answers to the Tree Trail Section Assignment (pdf)
Involves visiting trees in section and answering questions.

WEEK 8--More on common property.

WEEK 9--Review for midterm?

MIDTERM 2-- March 19

WEEK 10-- Bring typed draft paper topic paragraph to hand in to Prof. Fairfax at lecture on Wed. To section: Bring 2 things you found on the Chinese in the Gold Rush from the web link in the syllabus.

WEEK 11-- Read China Men. We will discuss land claims in section.

WEEK 12-- Bring typed paper outline to section to hand in.

WEEK 14-- Hand in FINAL version of paper.

SAMPLE Midterm 1 QUESTIONS
Define the “Indian New Deal.”
Briefly explain why US Forest Service emphasized fire suppression in their management of the Yurok forest.
Describe the property rights system of the Yurok.
What are the four tenets of “professional forestry” according to Fortmann and Fairfax?
Describe how the Native Americans had to adapt to colonial European settlers’ land use practices according to Cronon.
Would John Locke accept Yurok usufructuary property rights as a legitimate form of property ownership? Why or why not? (Justify your answer).
Give one reason why it is harder to control the distribution of redwood with fire than it is to control the distribution of Douglas fir with fire. Explain your answer.
Define “German forestry” and why these ideals were inapplicable to the Yurok forest.
Define the “one drop of blood” rule and discuss how it relates to the course.
Discuss the “frontier” and the “safety valve” theory of Turner.
