The Governor’s Action Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity:
Get Healthy California

The Governor's Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity was held on September 15, 2005 at the Cal Expo in Sacramento. A select group of leaders from multiple sectors including food industry, health plans, public education, real estate development, transportation, parks and recreation to name a few joined other health and community groups, as well as celebrities like Lance Armstrong and Dr. Phil, to present ways to reduce obesity rates in California.

The Governor launched the day by challenging leaders in “government, business, education, medicine and parenting to continue what we have begun today to make California the nation’s model for health, nutrition, and fitness”. “This is a day of action, a day that we are joining together to launch a bold and unified effort….”

First Lady Maria Shriver acknowledged the challenges faced by communities in California : “As I traveled the state, I saw first hand the remarkable efforts that many Californians are making to ensure their communities are healthy environments, but I also learned that many of our neighborhoods don’t have safe parks and playgrounds or available fresh produce. The steps we are taking today will go a long way towards addressing these problems.”

The summit marks the culmination of a nearly year-long series of meetings and negotiations held throughout the State during which the administration developed its own policy response to obesity and garnered the support and active participation of industry in confronting the issue.

The Governor presented A Vision for California - 10 Steps Toward Healthy Living, which outlines ways in which all sectors of society can help create an environment that encourages healthy eating, regular physical activity and better individual choices.

The Summit’s Honor Roll includes a list of 25 companies and organizations that announced initiatives to increase healthy food choices and opportunities for physical activity for employees, clients, and/or customers. The Honor Roll includes companies such as Brenden Theaters, Dole, El Pollo Loco, Kaiser Permanente, Lewis Operating Corporation, Ruiz Foods, Kraft, Safeway, Subway, and 24 Hour Fitness.

The Governor also announced the actions and commitments his administration is taking to ensure that state government does its part to provide leadership and model practices that foster healthy eating and active living. A summary of the existing State of California Nutrition and Physical Activity Programs is also available.

He also signed landmark legislation that constitutes the most progressive school nutrition reforms in the nation:

  • SB 12 by Senator Martha Escutia sets nutrition standards for foods served and sold in K-12 public schools
  • SB 965 also by Senator Martha Escutia extends the ban on the sale of soda and other sweetened beverages currently in elementary and middle schools to include high schools also
  • SB 281 by Senator Abel Maldonado provides a framework to implement the $18.2 million in the Governor’s budget to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in school meal programs.

The Summit is just a start. The First Lady announced that she and the Governor were committed to ensuring follow-through on the commitments that had already been made as well as pursuing additional commitments from other players. A committee including Health and Human Services Secretary Kimberly Belshé, Safeway Chief Executive Officer Steve Burd, and Center for Public Health Advocacy Executive Director Harold Goldstein was formed and charged with convening a workgroup to ensure the commitments are implemented and to build on the momentum of the summit by seeking additional commitments.

All participants at the summit received an Obesity Prevention Resource Kit compiled by the Center for Weight and Health, which includes:
