Blodgett Forest Research Symposium

Continuing Education in Silviculture

The Center for Forestry has entered in planning discussions to offer 2 intensive programs annually as part of the USDA Forest Service (USFS) Silvicultural Certification Program. The Center is currently holding training for CDF and USFS on uneven-aged silviculture, jointly with Cal Poly. The Center also co-sponsored a three-day conference on the coordination of silviculture and wildlife management this year.

Partnership on Research Cooperatives

The California Forest Research Association (CFA) is a mechanism that has been used in the past by UCB researchers to develop cooperative research programs with forest industry and natural resource management agencies. Center staff participated in several research priority sessions with members of the CFA. A list of research priorities has been developed, and research teams will be assembled to address concerns in areas of UC expertise. Funding to support these efforts will come from partners in the CFA.

State Forest Research and Demonstration

The Center for Forestry has started discussions with CDF state forest managers and Sacramento administrators to expand funding opportunities for research and demonstration on CDF-managed state forests. These discussions have been investigating a policy reform of how timber sale revenue is used, and the mechanisms needed to direct these to fund research and demonstration on state forests. The Center convened a planing session with UC faculty and CE advisors to discuss design of landscape level experiments on the state forests to address sustainable forestry issues, and protocols for developing these projects. The Center has entered into planning discussions with CDF, and forestry programs at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Humboldt State University to develop the concept of a "Forest Learning Center" to be located on the various state forests, as well as Center and other university-owned forests. A Memorandum of Understanding is being developed for this effort.

Outreach Efforts

During the past year, the Center has developed several outreach tools to reach clientele about its goals, objectives, and programs. A Web Page has been designed and placed on-line, with information on faculty and CE involved in Center programs, current research and extension projects, and information on Center properties. In addition, a colorful three-fold promotional pamphlet has been designed and printed. Another brochure has been designed which contains an annotated list of DANR forestry-related publications. A direct mailing of these printed documents has been made to over 1500 resource professionals in the state. Several press releases have been developed on specific Center activities.

Wildlife Policy

The Center for Forestry, together with the UCB Center for Sustainable Development, will be part of a national effort to evaluate possible changes in wildlife conservation policies. Together with Harvard's Kennedy School, and the University of Montana's Forestry School, a Senior Executive Forum on Wildlife Policy will be developed, which will culminate in a national wildlife congress to implement proposed changes. This fall, the two centers will develop a kick-off symposium to attract financial donors, through focus on markets for wildlife values and ownership issues
