Most of Russell's buildings date to the latter part of the 19th century, and the site maintains a rural farm atmosphere. The
original barn, blacksmith shop, and machine shops now see use as storage, shelter, workshop, and laboratory. There also
are houses for the resident manager and student helpers.
Research facilities include a mist house, a lathe house, an office and lab combination, and two
astronomy observatories. Ample room exists for project work. No overnight lodging is available except on a temporary
basis in provided trailers. A road system runs through the valleys of Russell Reservation with some roads reaching
ridge tops.
The reservation operates on a well water system and has water available throughout the valley.
Potable water, however, has to be brought in commercially. Some types of research are constrained by lack of large volumes of water.
The
property's heavy machinery includes a bulldozer, tractor, and portable sawmill. Also available are a wide range of field
tools.
Picnic facilities, a meeting room, a shower and restrooms are available.
