Research Opportunity For Local High School Students
We are looking for high school students who are interested in science, conservation, or environmental issues to assist with a research project in the San Francisco Bay
Area.
Who: The Forest Pathology and Mycology Laboratory at UC Berkeley is studying the spread of Sudden Oak Death (SOD), a serious exotic disease that is threatening the
survival of tree species in Northern California. Currently SOD is found from Monterey to Humboldt counties and has killed hundreds of thousands of oaks and tanoaks.
What: We need local high school students to volunteer to help survey trees in their local parks and neighborhoods for signs of SOD. We will provide a training
session
at
UC Berkeley on Saturday morning that will include background information about SOD, complete instructions, and a tour of our laboratory. The students will then collect
leaves from suspect trees in the bay area and return them to the lab for analysis. Students who are interested, may be invited back to volunteer in our lab.
Where: UC Berkeley Main Campus
When: Two dates - sign up for either Saturday 5/16/09 or 5/23/09.
Contact: Interested? Email dschmidt@nature.berkeley.edu
Include your name, contact information, the name of your high
school, grade you are currently in, and date you'd like to participate. Apply now, space is limited.
