Commencement Information for Guests

Reception

To be revised in December 2009.

The reception will follow the ceremony at approximately 11:30 am. It will be at the Campanile (central campus clock tower) Esplanade and refreshments will be served.

What to Wear

During May, the weather in Berkeley can vary from sunny and hot to rainy and cold.

In the past, the weather has been very pleasant, about 85 degrees Fahrenheit, sunny, with a cool breeze from the Bay.

We recommend that you dress in layers of "nice" summer clothes and bring a sweater or cardigan.

Some things you might consider bringing:

  • Umbrella
  • Raincoat/poncho
  • Suntan lotion
  • Hat
  • Small fan
  • Light sweater/cardigan (the breeze can be cold, even in the sun).
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Seat cushion

Tickets

To be revised in December 2009.

Commencement is a ticketed event. Each attendee must have a ticket to be admitted to commencement. (Graduates and children under the age of two do not need tickets.)

Each CNR graduate will be allotted a total of 4 free tickets for the Spring 2010 CNR Commencement Ceremony, date to be announced. Additional tickets may be purchased at the Zellerbach Hall ticket office at $5.00 per ticket: Zellerbach box office hours. Tickets will not be sold the day before or the day of the ceremony. Tickets will go on sale at the Zellerbach Hall ticket office in early April 2010.

CNR will begin distribution of the 4 free tickets in 260 Mulford Hall in late April for all CNR undergraduates. Students must present identification. Only those students who listed themselves on the CNR Commencement Program by the April deadline (to be announced) will receive free tickets.

Masters and Ph.D candidates: please pick up your 4 free tickets from your department advisor located in these buildings: ESPM 249 Mulford, PMB 111C Koshland, NST 124 Morgan, ARE 203 Giannini. Availability to be announced.

If the extra ticket cost proposes a hardship, students can come to 260 Mulford Hall and complete the "Hardship Ticket Application" by early May (deadline to be announced).A limited number of tickets will be released to families in financial hardship We will do our best to meet requests.

Special Seating

Special seating can be arranged for disabled guests and guests who cannot manage stairs. You may send requests to cnrteaching@berkeley.edu. Your request must be received by early May (deadline to be announced).

Based on availability, students who submitted hardship appeals for extra tickets, will be notified the first week of May 2010 to pick up your tickets.

Courtesty

We expect all students and guests to be courteous to the presenters as well as other audience members. Remember:

  • Turn off cell phones and other sound bearing devices for the duration of the ceremony
  • Remain in your seats until the emcee announces the end of the ceremony to ensure an enjoyable experience for all guests.

Commencement Day Instructions

Congratulations, CNR Graduates!

Arrival Time

Students participating in Commencement should arrive promptly at 8 am to the backstage area of the Hearst Greek Theater . They may enter at the north or south entrance. The program will begin promptly at 9 am. We estimate that the ceremony will last 2 hours.

Name Card

Students must get a name card. If necessary please spell name phonically so that it will be called correctly.

Lining Up

Find your major and line up accordingly.

Reception

The reception will follow the ceremony, at approximately 11:30 am. It will be at the Campanile Esplanada and refreshments will be served.

Students' Location in the Theater

Take a look at the map that shows approximately where the students will be seated in the pit of the Greek Theatre. Family and friends should know ahead of time where the students will be so that they can locate them more easily, without having to use cell phones. All seats at the Greek Theatre are neither shaded nor padded. Guests should bring seat cushions and jackets to ensure their comfort during the duration of the ceremony.

Special Seating

Please drop off special seating guest at the north entrance of the Greek (by the granite sign). We will have your name and requested number of special seating requests at the gate.
