The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded a one-year, $2 million grant to upgrade the research facilities at UC Berkeley's Gump field station on Moorea (French Polynesia). Marine research at Gump Station has grown rapidly and, in 2004, the National Science Foundation selected Moorea for its prestigious Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program. Moorea is one of only three marine sites in the 26-site LTER network.

New bungalows, research space, and the acquisition of equipment will be used to accelerate and enhance the long-term research program at this international center for coral reef studies. The upgrade is essential to support the LTER, to accommodate the related growth of coral reef research in Moorea, and to ensure that other research, educational, and outreach activities continue to be supported.
