ESPM 114 - Wildlife Ecology (3 credits, Fall semester)
An introduction to wildlife ecology and its relationship to management programs. Includes population, community, and ecosystem levels of organization, followed by selected case studies. Two hours of lecture and one hour of discussion per week.
ESPM 281 - Seminar in Wildlife Biology and Management (2 credits, Fall semester)
Reports and discussion of recent studies in wildlife biology and management. Reading, conference, and discussion. Prerequisites: ESPM 114 (Wildlife Ecology) and ESPM 187 (Advanced Wildlife Management). Open to qualified graduate students from other departments. May be repeated for credit. Two hours of lecture/seminar per week.
My research group studies the population dynamics, behavior and ecology of large mammals, primarily in the field, with special emphasis on ungulates and medium-sized carnivores. We are interested in the basic ecology of how these animals function in the natural environment as well as the kinds of information that will contribute to their long-term survival in a changing world. We use approaches from conservation biology as well as traditional wildlife management, and incorporate modern technology such as radio telemetry, automatic activity recording systems, geographic positioning systems, automatic cameras, and GIS and other computer software. I have used experimental manipulations to study density-dependent population processes of deer in the field at the George Reserve, Michigan and at Hopland Research and Extension Center and Fort Hunter Liggett, California. I have had a long and continuing interest in the ecology, management, and conservation of the rare tule elk, a California endemic subspecies. My international research includes studies on kangaroos in the outback of Australia, and deer and bears in Asia, particularly the Reeves muntjac in Taiwan. I am interested in conservation genetics and I have current projects on retained diversity of tule elk and identification of original stock of Taiwan sika deer. I recently edited a book, Metapopulations and wildlife conservation (Island Press) and am currently finishing a book on kangaroos.

My current research includes long-term studies at Hopland Research and Extension Center in Mendocino County, California, of population estimation, dynamics, and ecology of black-tailed deer, acorn production, and with Dr. Michael Jaeger (National Wildlife Research Center) and graduate students, studies on the ecology of predation by coyotes and bobcats on domestic sheep. A radiotelemetry study of Reeve's muntjac in dense forests of Taiwan is being completed. Studies of the ecology of black-tailed deer living in high-density housing areas in the urban environment in the East Bay, ecology of giant pandas in Foping Reserve in the Quinling Mountains of mainland China, retained genetic diversity in the tule elk, and identification of the original stock of the Taiwan subspecies of sika deer for a recovery program are projects underway.
