Summary of Experience

In addition to broad teaching responsibilities, Professor Churchman's consultation has included NASA, OE (Office of Education), NIH (Council of NIAID), U.S. Wildlife Services, and a number of corporations. He founded the first graduate MS and PhD programs in Operations Research at Case Institute of Technology of Cleveland, 1953. He has served on the Texas Energy Council, World Malnutrition (USAID), Educational Testing Service Research Committee, and System Development Corporation -Director of Research.

Professor Churchman taught a class in Peace and Ethics and writes extensively on this subject.

Professor Churchman has taught a variety of courses relating to the philosophy of management science including philosophy of systems science, introduction to ethics and value assumptions of planning and systems design, modeling and problem solving in management science. He also initiated the masters and PhD programs in operations research at the University of California, Berkeley.

Professor Churchman founded and assisted in the direction of this organized research unit on campus. Significant projects under its sponsorship have included the implementation in Operations Research and Research Management Improvement programs.

He directed the Social Sciences Program of the Space Sciences Laboratories, funded by the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA). Investigation comprised a study of the management of research in industry and government.

Professor Churchman organized the first operations research academic group, founded the first graduate MS and PhD programs in operations research, and co-authored the first textbook, Introduction to Operations Research (with Ackoff, Arnoff, et al.)

He served on the faculty of Wayne University offering courses in the Philosophy Department.

Professor Churchman taught courses in the methodology of the formal and nonformal sciences, wrote a basic text, Elements of Logic, and translated Saccheri's Euclid Vindicated of Every Blemish. He also served from 1945-1978 as Chairman of the Philosophy Department.

Churchman devised a way of testing small arms ammunition and detonators based on the statistical methods of bioassay. He also investigated the theory of detonation, applying high-speed photography.

Churchman founded the Institute of Experimental Method, dedicated to applying E.A. Singer's concept of experiment to real social problems. He wrote Psvchologistics (with Russell Ackoff) which provides a basic overall language for the social sciences based on Singer theory of purposive behavior. He also wrote Theory of Experimental Inference to provide the basic methodology for this effort.
