Downloading CACTOS and CRYPTOS systems

The programs required to run CACTOS and CRYPTOS are provided in a series of self-extracting zip files that are provided free of charge from this site. These are the complete and most recent releases of each of the programs. (The only other program that I plan to release later in is a Windows-based program for entering stand description files.) A Windows-based version of a system for making stand projections and for evaluating forest management options is being developed elsewhere -- but that will be announced later so save the money you would have spent on CACTOS and CRYPTOS and put it towards this new system that should be announced in 2000!

For CACTOS you'll need to download the following self-extracting files: CACTOS.exe, STAG.exe, and UTIL.exe as well as the two coefficient files (cofile.603 and climate.103). For CRYPTOS you'll need CRYPTOS.exe and UTIL.exe. Create a directory to save these files in then double click on them (in Windows) and they will allow you to save their content files in your directory.

All of the programs in the CACTOS and CRYPTOS systems run in DOS. For CACTOS, type "run cactos64.exe" and, when prompted, give the coefficient file as "cofile.603" and climate filename "climate.103".

Most of the documentation for these programs is available on line so browse this information to become familiar with what is available under my web page. Copies of some of the other documents (those released as bulletins of the University of California's Agricultural Experiment Station) are available for a charge from
