Environmental Leadership Pathway

The Environmental Leadership Pathway (ELP) was a one-year program that prepared underserved, low-income, and first in the family community college students in science majors to transfer successfully to and thrive at four-year institutions. Supported by the National Science Foundation, the program operated from 2006 - 2012 and was part of an effort to increase diversity in the scientific community. The ELP provided academic enrichment, field and laboratory research opportunities, teaching experience, and direct financial support for over 25 Bay Area community college students each year.

The ELP program is no longer accepting students

Program Goals

  1. Attract highly motivated community college students with the ambition to succeed in science at U.C. Berkeley’s College of Natural Resources or other four-year institutions.

  2. Provide students with the knowledge to successfully navigate the transfer application process.

  3. Strengthen student scientific skills and understanding, and help them to explore career options in environmental science, or other science, technology, math and engineering fields.

  4. Encourage students to develop mentor relationships within their group and with Berkeley students, faculty and staff. Develop and connect with other academic resources.

  5. Build scientific communication skills and share scientific knowledge through teaching in order to reach out to local schools and to strengthen synthetic understanding in our students.
