Russ Forsburg, President

California Alumni Foresters

The CAF Executive Committee (which includes Larry Camp '71, Neal Ewald '78, Russ Forsburg '78, Ed Murphy '78, and Al Stangenberger '65) has been working with the College of Natural Resources to ensure that there is a quality professional forestry program at Cal. Executive Committee members were involved with interviewing candidates for Dean of the College as well as the Fire Science faculty position. The Executive Committee has worked closely with Rick Standiford, Associate Dean of Forestry, and Joe McBride, Chair, Division of Forest Science to identify ways to improve the forestry program including the need for additional forestry faculty recruitments.

The Executive Committee is very excited about this new Newsletter. It will be an excellent vehicle for communication to the alumni, faculty, and other interested parties about the forestry program at Cal. To help get the newsletter developed and published CAF has donated $3000. Check page 7 for a short update on CAF activities and programs.

Summer Camp Picnic

The California Alumni Foresters returned to Summer Camp at Meadow Valley on July 15 for their annual Alumni Picnic. More than 60 people attended with the following classes being represented: '36, '38, '41, '43, '49, '50, '51, '59, '64, '65, '66,'74, '70, '78, and '00. In addition to alumni, the following faculty were also present: John Helms, Bill Libby, Joe McBride, Rick Standiford, Al Stangenberger, Lee Wensel, and John Zivnuska. A highlight was the gathering of the Class of 1950 who celebrated their 50-year graduation anniversary. Attendees listened to presentations by Joe McBride and Rick Standiford who discussed the forestry program at Berkeley. Alumni, faculty and Summer Camp students enjoyed an excellent barbecue dinner prepared by Summer Camp staff.

Endowment Funds

The CAF has announced the establishment, under the auspices of the Berkeley Foundation, of two Forestry Endowment Funds. With CAF oversight, these funds are intended to sustain and strengthen the professional forestry program and forestry research at Berkeley. Named The CAF Professional Forester Scholarship Endowment and The Foresters' Teaching Fund, both funds will provide State and Federal tax deductions to the donors.

The CAF Professional Forester Scholarship Endowment is intended for those students in the Forestry and Resource Management Majors who intend to pursue a career in professional forest management. This scholarship opportunity will be made available to students who have reached junior class standing and have successfully completed Summer Camp. Scholarships will be awarded based on a candidate's potential for contribution to the forestry profession in addition to student merit and need.

The Foresters' Teaching Fund is designed to meet the short-term needs of the Professional Forestry Program at Berkeley. It is intended to provide funds for equipment and teaching supplies, teaching assistants, intern sponsorships, publication costs (Timber, Forestry Newsletter, etc.), student support (SAF meetings, etc), forestry research, etc.

A mailing to the CAF membership formally announcing these new funding opportunities will occur this fall. CAF is hoping that these opportunities will be well received by the alumni and others concerned about maintaining excellence in Berkeley's forestry program.

CAF Annual Meeting and Banquet

The Annual Meeting and Banquet will be on Friday, October 13, 2000. Once again, CAF activities will coincide with the Homecoming, Reunion & Family Weekend at CAL. Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho) will be the featured speaker of the S.J. Hall Lecture Series, which will occur in the afternoon before the Annual Meeting. Additional information will soon be sent out to CAF members.
