From the Editor

The Forestry Center is delighted to establish a new Forestry at Berkeley Newsletter, which is designed to bring you, twice-yearly in September and April, news of the diverse programs of forestry at UC Berkeley. We are grateful to the Cal Alumni Foresters for generously supplying funds to make this possible. I also want to recognize Associate Dean Rick Standiford's leadership in establishing this Newsletter and for providing the excellent editorial and production assistance of Rubyann Arcilla.

This Newsletter continues the tradition of a previous forestry department newsletter that you may remember was distributed throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. The first issue of this new Newsletter provides a brief introduction to all the diverse components that constitute forestry at Berkeley. Subsequent issues will provide updates on what has been happening in the past six months as well as include feature articles on faculty and graduate students and their research, and more detailed information on programs and activities. I welcome your comments on this Newsletter and encourage suggestions for future content.
